Today we had our second test shoot while we still have Josh Calles with us from Gisborne. This shoot was a lot more relaxed and thankfully indoors.
Here we tested blocking a scene and using the haze machine to play with light and atmosphere. We have been given advice that we need to create greater depth and spectrum with our lighting. It was also a great opportunity for Ruby (who is playing our Tori) and Josh to start to bond a bit and get used to working together.
Today, well it actually ended up very late tonight, we finished our first test shoot as a crew. Josh Calles our lead actor drove all the way up from Gizzy and then arrived straight onto set, such a trouper.
We practised lighting techniques, shot composition, made plans for capturing the best audio and learnt so much. Test shooting and getting the crew used to working together before the real deal is truly a must. We now know that we need to pick up the pace and leave more time for set up between shots.
Also we had our first meal together on set … great times!
Jason was undoubtably one of the most helpful people on set, he has an amazing knack for anticipating the needs of others, he quietly goes about getting done what needs to be done. We wouldn’t have lasted the distance without him.
He has extensive experience in shooting and editing television series and was thrilled to be involved in this project as it gave him the opportunity to up skill and learn through the process.
We will just say this now, no-one can out eat Jason… every morning before breakfast on set he would have two pies and an energy drink! Legend.
Today was all about the schedule. We have never made a movie before so at this point we are really (kind of educated) guessing at this point. Notice how everything is in pencil… yip that became very important as they day went on. We are being very ambitious with this shoot but hey, every moment counts and when you are passionate about a project, you will make it work.
We are planning a number of test shoots as when you are low budget you need to really get creative about how you execute certain shots. If nothing else, this is going to be a great learning opportunity.
Juandre, has experience in both IT network configuration and maintenance and television production. He really enjoyed working with the team on Broken as a camera assist to gain more experience. He has an eye for details and likes a challenge.
Juandre can be found travelling, enjoying good food and taking fantastic photos.
So tonight Sammi pulled together her team of ladies who we are calling the “pretty committee”. These wonderful individuals are in charge of creating awesome and authentic costumes, make up and hair design and gang patches.
Andrea is looking after all our hair and makeup on set, she will also be looking into designing tattoos for all our gang members. Ariana will oversea the costume department. She will be op shopping and searching for all kinds of costumes and props to bring our characters to life. Charissa will be designing the patches for our gangs… don’t be fooled by her sweet nature… she knows what it takes to create some pretty awesome patches.
